Steam Paid Mods Megathread

Out of curiousity, how long have you been gaming on a PC?

Because I've been here for over 20 years, and it's never been better, as far as I can tell. We're long past the days of complete driver incapability, CD-Key's being smudged, installing games from six to eight DVDs, and requiring a full re-build every three years just to run the latest games. I haven't had to spend hours setting up a LAN party, ever, because I don't need to worry about hunting down the right patch version and making sure everyone somehow has the right version, and no need to re-install one person's game because somehow he has patch 1.14 (which doesn't exist anywhere on the internet to upgrade or downgrade from) and we're all on 2.0. I haven't seen a prompt to decide between the ever-mysterious SOUNDBLASTER or SOUNDBLASTER3D sound options, and I haven't had to even think about OpenGL/DirectX in over a decade.

How exactly does Steam opening up the paid workshop for one game, a feature announced years ago when Valve was introducing the concept for the workshop, indicate that PC gaming is getting worse? And, on top of that, why are we judging the day-one output of this whole system? I remember when the friends list didn't actually do anything and Steam was nothing more than a totally unfunctional client for Valve games. Had a judgment been made on Steam during their first day - hell, the first year, - PC Gaming would be nowhere near as ubiquitous and successful as it is today. Steam turned out to be absurdly revolutionary and is now the most commonly installed digital distribution platform.

I have a really hard time believing a lot of the people perpetuating the current outrage have been here for very long. If someone's Steam account is less than 10 years old, I really don't think they have room to talk about the trajectory of PC gaming. Steam and other digital distribution platforms simply have not been here for very long, and I refuse to pass judgment on something that was released an entire day ago.

I'm interested to see how this develops.
