Suicides are increasing in Australia for everyone, and male suicide is about three times the rate of female. I don't know if nobody gives a shit. The public health strategy Australia (and the rest of the developed world) seems to have adopted is to draw attention away from the specifics of suicide to reduce ideation in vulnerable people. I know I dwell a little too long on newspaper stories involving suicides. For some reason it makes sense to mental health professionals to encourage not talking publicly about suicide while encouraging those at risk to talk to a doctor. It's a fiendishly difficult problem, and the silence looks for all the world like 'not giving a shit'. The solutions are beyond the scope of public health, and will rely on a complete overhaul of the system that demands people be interchangeable economic units in all areas of life, including in personal matters. Too many people are indoctrinated into treating every aspect of their life as transactional. Nothing short of a complete philosophical overhaul of the way we treat each other and the planet will make a lasting difference in suicide.

In relation to 'women only gyms', women are preyed on by some men. They have a different experience of life than do men, and it makes sense for them to have different strategies to deal with the world. That's easy enough to understand without having to sympathise or empathise. Nothing of substance can be discussed on this matter without acknowledging this elephant in the room.
