Is supervised residency of 1-2 years compulsory to get matched in internal medicine?

I was told by a mentor that I need to go to public medical research webistes like pubmed, download articles and research works related to my field of interest and contact the person(s) who did those research. And try to get involved with them and get atleast 5-6 of those research published in public website and newspapers.

Which might increase my chances of getting matched.

Soo yeah.

Since I'll be doing all this after clearing step 1 and before step 2, I will be basically working under supervision of a registered medical practitioner. (That is if someone is willing to take me in.)

This is called supervised residency.

All I will gain from this is a name in their research for the work I'll do. As far as I know, I won't get paid any amount for this work.
