Tennessee pastor apologizes for 'sexual incident' with teen

Note: some of this is a paragraph of what I have commented elsewhere regarding this story

As a Christian, allow me to provide context to the applause he received from his congregation, as many outlets are focusing on it. They were applauding because he admitted it. Not because he did it. However, I would like to say I would not have clapped if I were in that congregation. The congregation were applauding Andy's ability to own up to it. But what they don't realize (or care to realize) is that it took almost 20 years of silence and for the victim to speak up for him to finally admit to it. That is not applause worthy.

I predict this will be a debate over forgiveness, repentance, and consequences for behavior. I will admit, this story gives me cognitive dissonance. On one hand, I abhor what he did, on the other hand my faith says that the forgiveness of God is given freely to all. However, I end up landing on the side of supporting the victim.

Arguing from a perspective of faith, I can think of a few Bible verses one can chain together to defend the response of the church congregation, but there is one I believe that negates any defense:

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:8-9

That's my perspective anyway.
