Homelander ‘breaking bad’ was more of a slow-burn in the comic series — rather than starting off with an uncaring individual willing to randomly laser a plane like the series’ version, the comic series’ Homelander was closer to the series’ Soldier Boy — jerkish, belligerent (in the past), and willing to carry out Vought’s will — but in fact innocent of everything Butcher thought he did (with regards to his wife and others). In fact, a third party was masterminding events to pit Butcher and Homelander against one another the entire series, for the ultimate goal of driving Homelander insane so that he would actually do something somewhat similar to the above — the above marks the first and only time in the comic series where he had intentionally and purposefully (in a non-intoxicated state, in case someone is going to bring up the Herogasm plane) killed innocent people, and it did have an explicit purpose — what is shown in the next panel is every flying Supe there is up in the air with Homelander, watching and about to listen to his speech on plans to finally rebel against Vought. Any one Supe there could have saved those people — the point was a a silent but implicit “Are you with me?”
