TIL, in Texas, to prevent a thief from escaping with your property, you can legally shoot them in the back as they run away.

A lot of thieves may just want to steal from you and that's it, but we've got some really sick people in this society. I'm not going to argue about whether things are worse or better than they were years ago, the fact remains that we just have some really fucking weirdos in this world now. We have people who don't want to get caught stealing and will stop at nothing to prevent that from happening.

Yeah, you have insurance, but what would happen if you happened to walk into the kitchen and some guys were there stealing your microwave? Are they just going to bolt out the door and leave, thinking you have a gun or not wanting to get caught? (Story from another Redditor actually who did find people stealing his microwave and tried to attack him when he saw them.) Perhaps, and probably more likely. But what about the chance of them attacking you because they don't want to get caught, fearing you saw their face and will report them to the police? Or what about people who break into your home, not looking to steal anything, but wanting more like to rape you or hoping someone else lives there to rape or maybe brutally murder because it sounds "fun"? It may be very unlikely to ever happen to you or even anyone else in this thread, but that's a chance I, personally, would never take and would work hard to protect myself from, even if it means shooting you because you're in my house stealing from me because I don't know what other intentions you have. And if you've got the balls to break into my home and steal from me, your intentions probably aren't in my best interests.

It's up to the intruder whether their life is more valuable than a TV or not, not your choice to make because you aren't the one violating someone else.

And the difference between someone being killed when they're in the progress of intruding into your home versus being sentenced to death after being caught is that you don't know what their intention is while they're in your home. You want to ask them why they're there? Fine, you go ahead, but I'm not waiting around to find out. You turned yourself in or were caught midway/after a robbery? Fine, go to prison, serve your time, learn your lesson, but beyond that, if you didn't physically harm anyone, you're right, no one deserves to die for something like that, that happened in their past that they may be working to get away from.
