You travel back to 1950 and can show one movie that will absolutely blow their minds - what do you choose?

yeah no i'm not saying it's a bad thing at all. tolkien was a brit with german ancestry who was also a roman catholic and an expert in linguistics and mythology. his work is literally a fusion of all of those things - the silmarillion is very much a fusion of norse mythology and catholic christian mythology (choirs of angels, lucifer wanting to out-do god and falling from grace, etc). characters like tom bombadil are straight out of celtic myths. the mixing of various 'races' in tolkien's world somewhat mirrors the mixing of the many groups of people that invaded the british isles over time.

so yeah tolkien was creating a mythos that was directly tied to the world he knew. even his experiences in WWI shaped his depiction of war, evil, the lust for power. and also further influenced his english Romantic hatred of mechanization and love of the simple, quiet country life.
