Trolls, after getting in a bout of depression, I ramped up my job search and found a therapist. MRW I got the call yesterday for a job offer with better pay and benefits and it's not retail!

Benefits pay for therapists.

Helpful hint to anyone with insurance (I'm in USA) I learned the hard way:

The psychiatrist is traditionally the one who writes you prescriptions for antidepressants. Insurance views him just like it would view a visit to your GP or OBGYN or any other doctor -- it's a purely medical thing. The visits usually are 15 minute blocks.

The psychologist is the one you talk to for a 45 min - 1 hour session. Think of the mental image of the person laying on the couch talking. That's the psychologist.

The insurance issue that you have to be careful about is, a lot of the time, you get X number of visits to the psychologist per year. Say, 45 visits per year. Then insurance won't pay for more than that.

The psychiatrist is considered medicine managment usually, so there's no limitations on how many visits the insurance cover.

There can be some overlap, the person who you talk to for an hour every week can also be the one who writes your prescription. But be careful how that's billed. This happened to me once, the psychiatrist was billing 5 minute med management updates as full hour therapy visits. It was either fradulent (my guess, he was shady AF) or somebody fucked up.

Either way, I found my therapy visits cut off early in the year and had to ride it out the rest of the year with paying out of my pocket to the therapist.

The above goes in the same box as "make triple damn sure the anesthesiologist is in network because that one costs twice as much as the surgeon." You'll make that mistake only once, also. Everyone who touches you always must be "in network" and you have to make sure beforehand.

This means that the psychiatrist and the psychologist in the same office -- one might be in network and the other not in network and the insurance pays less or not at all and you're on the hook. Same goes for surgery -- that one nurse who's in charge of dispensing pills who's not in network? Yeah, that too.

Off topic but possibly relevant. If you are the type who responds to a chiropractor, and if your insurance covers a chiropractor -- there is a way to get a massage covered by insurance. It's all about putting the right code in. Before you say "you scumbag taking advantage of insurance like that" I do so much better when I've had a massage before my chiropractor adjustment. Getting your neck popped isn't for everyone, but if it works for you, it really, really works.

TLDR Make sure your insurance covers X and make sure they are in network, and make sure everyone involved is in network, and make sure they use the right damn codes so your insurance company will pay for it!

Woot Woot OP! Congrats to you!

(Oh, also, if you are in the USA, you don't have to tell work you have depression. But if you do have an episode, it's covered under the ADA and they can't fire you if you have to take time off because of depression -- or more likely, if you are on antidepressants and switch and the adjustment is really rough so you need to take a bit of time to get used to the new antidepressant and deal with withdrawal (um, "discontinuation syndrome" cough cough) from the old one.)

Woo!
