True Tag Teams vs Two Superstars in a Tag Team (Austin Podcast Spoiler)

This is not a criticism at or, nor is it a bait to insult you, it does have a bearing on my answer, though: Round about when did you start watching wrestling and with which promotion?

It's been a very long time since WWE had a solid stable of true tag-teams... this, in part, is why they keep hailing old teams like the Hardys and the Dudleys. They're only just starting to have a handful of dyed-in-the wool teams that are not merely teams because they contain two performers that couldn't make it as individuals. The Dudleys, the Usos, and Los Matadores are the only true tag teams via history that come to mind, for me, right now. While there are other teams, and they're enjoyable, it's not as if they're not a whim away from being split-up in an attempt to gain a dollar-hold due to someone gaining slightly more personal momentum than the rest of the team... yes, as truly entertaining as they are, even the New Day will be subject to this.

There was a time when guys toured as nothing but tag-teams and never really intended to be anything but tag-teams. Pairs who came as a package and were promoted as such and there was a coordination and familiarity of the team that made them something special: The Can-Am Express, The Eliminators, The Road Warriors, The Samoans, The British Bulldogs(though they did split, they were an iconic and inarguable legend as tag-teams), Harlem Heat, The Rock and Roll Express, The Midnight Express... all teams with an inarguable chemistry that make for whole more than the sum of its parts...

Today there are some teams outside of WWE that have specific impact... some of the TNA Teams like Beer Money, America's Most Wanted, The Wolves... Some of the indy teams like the Kings of Wrestling, Cheech & Cloudy, etc... Chikara's various teams have been highlighted to specific effect...

I've just never been able to liken the impact of a Super Team of standalone stars as more than a stop-gap, short of something like the Four Pillars of Heaven or the Brothers of Destruction.
