[TV SPOILERS] It's so weird watching Season 1.

I cant speak for the comics, but it happened in the show when Rick and Glenn covered themselves in walker blood/guts in Atlanta. They had to climb over a fence to escape the walkers after it started to rain and at least one walker followed them over.

I'm not sure what this sub in general thinks and would be interested to hear some other perspectives, but I honestly preferred the season 1 walkers to what we have now. It would have changed many of the story arcs that I really like, but they were actually terrifying. I feel like 95% of the danger the characters get into with the walkers we have now has to be a result of complete stupidity or ridiculous circumstances because you can just kite them if they're in a small group or escape with a light jog otherwise.

The walkers make a shit ton of noise but they still manage to sneak up on the characters or just pop up out of nowhere in a silent room or something because it's a convenient way to create danger with such useless zombies. Like in season 2 when the walker grabbed Maggie in the pharmacy, or when the walker was hiding behind a tree for some reason and tried to grab Andrea before they got to the farm. Every single time a walker sneaks up on somebody I facepalm, and it happens way too often.

The walkers have to be extremely inconsistent in order for the characters to be in any danger whatsoever. Like, I get that it's a show about the characters themselves and it's not so much about the horror, but it's like they decided to take this middle ground where they still try to force danger/suspense through character stupidity and inconsistent walkers instead of letting it happen scarcely but organically (like getting cornered/trapped by hordes or something). The revolving door scene in the last episode was awesome, but the shooting of the grenade that caused the initial panic was one of those ridiculous circumstances that didn't really need to happen. The girl falling off that vehicle due to a stray bullet was another example in that episode of ridiculousness used to create danger.

I feel like the writers wouldn't use character stupidity or ridiculous circumstances to create danger as often if we still had the season 1 walkers. They seem insistent on making the current walkers a threat in situations where they really shouldn't be, and I think taking that route would be much better with more threatening walkers (i.e. the walkers from season 1).
