When communism is first instituted and the workers are filled with revolutionary zeal, they make an honest and good faithed effort to improve the motherland through collective effort. It is their patriotic duty and they are proud to do their part. It fulfills its initial promise of solving certain problems primarily by removing the previous corruption and installing fresh faces who feel their position is tenuous enough that they work hard, and stay honest.

As time passes and the communist state gains more secure control of the levers of power, all of society is swept along with it. The bureaucracy that is built to institute communist reforms has control and it carries the rest of the nation along with it wherever it wants to go.

The communists grip on power slips eventually, always, because the levers of power become an end unto themselves. They see the luxury that the powerful are able to bestow upon themselves and their loved ones and they want it. They see it as an injustice that others have such power and not themselves. Control over the levers of power becomes the goal. Their revolutionary zeal that only lasts as far as it can carry them in their ambitions.

Those who are not positioned to pursue such power and influence become dependent on the state. Property is owned by the state, all institutions are run and controlled by the state, and decisions are made by the state. Individual accountability is a foreign concept, and without anything to gain from aspirations people tend to become lazy and dependent on the state.

When the ambitious members of the political class who seek power and influence without the true heart of a revolutionary patriot then the states grip on power begins to slip. The state can no longer justify it's grip on power due to unfaithfulness to ideological goals, and people no longer believe them to capable of staying true to ideological goals. Faith is lost in the state and state loses grip on power, the people come crashing down to earth because they have not stood on their own for so long.

It is an inevitable cycle. A true communist utopian state can not be achieved before the expiration of the revolutionary zeal that brings it into a position of power. It will always fail.
