what has been your most bone-chilling, hair-raising, "Let's get the hell out of here" experience?

I woke up in the middle of the night to get a drink, my mom was fast asleep in her bedroom, and as I walk out into the front room, I felt at least a -10 degree change in the room.

My head turns towards the door, it had been a windy day earlier. The door had been blown open, possibly left gaping open for hours.

My stomach dropped.

I quickly went over to the door and shut and locked it.

I thought to myself, "Who knows how long this door has been open? I'm the only one awake, better check for marauders. At first I went back to my room and had the door locked for at least 5 minutes, checking for any sound, then I unlocked and came out in the pitch black darkness, and slowly started my way around the house tip-toeing in the dark.

When I made it to the kitchen safely, I grabbed a knife from our wooden knife block. My stomach was trembling and I flicked on the light to the laundry room.

Phew, no one there. I turned my attention to the back room, flicked on the light.

Whew, no one there.

Then I hear a crash come from the bathroom. On the verge of tears I grip the knife a little tighter and go back around to the bathroom, slowly open the door, flick on the light, and approach the closed shower curtain.

In one fell swoop, I swished back the curtain, ready to stab any intruder on sight.

Alas, a shampoo bottle had fallen from the edge of the bathtub, and into the bathtub.

I went back to the kitchen, put the knife away, got that glass of water I was dying for, went to pee, and went back to bed.
