What is the best way to change careers to IT with little cost?

I just moved on from a role doing desktop support with a major healthcare technology company at a large academic hospital system. Massive IT department with lots of teams covering various different aspects of the hospital. I worked with a handful of people that had moved from nursing or other patient facing roles into IT, and I know their background helped them tremendously. We even had a couple guys who mainly dealt with the pharmacies and their various technological solutions. All this to say, get some basic knowledge of IT and put some resumes out. Certs won’t hurt, but really what you need is to let a team lead know you’re interested, because often HR will be your biggest barrier. If you have any connections, use them. But there wasn’t anything in my previous role a willing spirit and some patience couldn’t have picked up after a few months, and the right manager will absolutely value that you know how awful it is to work in healthcare (and have industry knowledge).

Expect a pay cut.
