What is the currency of the apocalypse?

Not speaking about a post nuclear world and not about the direct aftermath of a catastrophe.

In terms of food these things will probably be worth a lot:

  • Honey: High Energy, keeps you from starving and is very durable. It would also be easy to transport.
  • Salt: Very important in order to keep meat and fish durable. It as precious as gold in the middle ages for a reason.
  • Livestock: Enough livestock would probably make you pretty rich. Lifestock can feed you and your family and be a great currency. In a lot of societies a mans wealth is measured by the amount of livestock he owns, for good reason.

Probably also pretty good:

  • Weapons/ammunition: For obvious reason. There is no need to have huge amounts of food/livestock/water if you can just kill someone for it. Also it would be important to defend yourself.
  • Gold/Jewelry: Maybe not as important in the first few years after an acopalitical world. But I believe as soon as people have enough food and water they will look for something in order to show their wealth and status.
  • Clothes/Furs: Without central heating warm clothes will become very important, for obvious reason. They will also be very valuable, easy to transport and be very durable. So all in all a perfect currency.

Probably overestimated:

  • Water: Yes, water is extremely important and most people would die of thirst before before dying of starvation. But it would not be an ideal currency. Anyone without any access to fresh water would likely die anyway (short term or long term). And with rivers/rain waiter and water filters chances are a lot of people will have some sort of water supply. Currencies also need to be transportable. It will be hard walking half a day to some sort of market/town with over 20kg of water with you. Water would be extremly important directly after an acopalypse but more for you than as a currency. Anyone in desperate need of water would be likely to kill you if you have some.

  • Coffee: Right after an acopalypse no one will value the taste of a good coffee over a warm fur or a meal to fill their stomachs (expect maybe r/coffee). After a few years it would probably become a luxury product without any source of supply (unless you are living in a cofee producing country). Since the supply would not be steady and you would never know what you would get for it (since no one would really need it, but some might want it), it probably would not be the best currency.
