What is just not cool anymore?

Not true, I took a college history class, we had about 1/3 the nightly hw (this class was condensed into 3 weeks as well) as the high school history class I took last year. I'm talking 40 page academic readings nightly, as well as research papers, tests, research for debates and Socratic seminars, and this was just ONE CLASS (took 2-4 hours on average). I also had about 4 pages of work per night for math (took 1-3 hours depending on the amount of proofs), a work sheet for physics (usually under an hour), a worksheet for Japanese (took about an hour, but would have been half an hour if I knew the material better), reading for English (usually less than half an hour a night). We'd also have long term projects in physics and English that required work outside of class, and I'd often work on projects for computer science (although not technically assigned as hw).

This was block scheduling though so each night these things were assigned I had 2 days to do them, so it could have been worse....
