What movie had the best unexpected ending ?

I watched the American version of this way back when it first came out, so it's a bit hazy, but I remember several parts of it very well. The whole beginning sequence where the wife disappears was heart-rending as hell. That sort of thing gets to me and I related with the main character on that level and understood why he would want to know the truth regardless of the cost.

The villain was quite interesting as well, and I remember Roger Ebert pointing this out in his review of the film, how the villain's motivation was insanely logical, in that he saved a life and so he felt justified to take a life to restore balance to the world.

Dark, brilliant stuff.
