What do people in the north US do when winter storms take out electricity?

Canadian here! I don’t think I know anyone who owns a generator. But our heat systems are typically powered by natural gas (or in some cases for people out in the country, they use wood stoves/fireplaces). I think it’s quite rare for a home to have only electric heat sources. Also, our houses have a lot of insulation so even if you did lose heat for a while, they don’t freeze right away (though as soon as heat goes I turn the taps to a slow drip to prevent pipes from freezing - I’ve never had that coincide with a power outage though, that’s just a broken furnace).

So we don’t freeze if the power is out. We usually try to make sure we have some candles around and some kind of battery powered light sources. Don’t open fridges or freezers if the power goes out - they’ll stay cold a shockingly long time if you leave them shut. If your stove is electric you’re kinda SOL on cooking, but that’s fine. Some Canadians have a tradition of stocking up on chips (aka Storm Chips) before a big storm haha. We get out the board games and settle in, mostly. Potentially also get out and shovel as needed and/or go skating.
