What do people THINK is a scam, but they actually just don't understand it?

I moved to a beachside retirement town where super rich people live. I am not super rich, I just wanted to be near family.

For my entire life I had one dentist - George. George was amazing, almost part of the family. He took care of my whole family. He was always honest: my mom had shit teeth and her whole mouth is now fakes and bridges. My dad, on the other hand, is one of those unicorns who has just the right chemical composition of saliva and good genes that he really has never needed a dentist his whole life. Thankfully, my sister and I mostly inherited that. We have amazingly straight, white, strong teeth. We rarely needed anything.

Once I moved here the new dentist (the big, clean, "best" dentist in the rich seaside town) said I had several cavities. When fixing one, he used something to pry my teeth apart. He broke a tooth in half, and then didn't say anything. I only noticed it because my mouth hurt like a bitch for a month and when I finally felt like I could floss again, I kept getting the floss stuck on something and it was excruciating.

Oh, and they tried to tell me my teeth were terrible in my 30's and that I needed invisalign, of all things.

I asked around with the (poorer) locals and got told to go see a dentist in a shabby converted house the next town over, the "poor" town. This dentist actually called his techs in and said "This is a set of perfect teeth." and showed me off. He fixed me right up and was way cheaper, too. Haven't had an issue since.

Some dentists are frauds.

I seriously consider flying the 2000+ km back to where I grew up just for dental appointments now.
