What was something that happened to you as a child that you didn't realize was scary/creepy/dangerous until you got older?

I was probably 8 years old or so. I was with a large group of family and friends for dinner at a truck stop style steakhouse. I had to poop sooooo bad but I was mortified of using public bathrooms for that. But we lived way out in the country, and there was no way I would be home for another two hours and I just couldn't take it.

I mustered up the courage to go after coming to terms with the fact that I wouldn't make it otherwise. I was relieved when I realized/remembered that the men's bathroom was just a single toilet, so I wouldn't have to worry about pooping next to someone. So feeling much better I was able to happily poop.

Then someone knocked. "They'll go away" I thought

Then the door knob started to turn. "I locked it."

The door opens. "This is the worst thing that has ever happened to me."

A guy peaks steps partially in (Trucker hat, plaid button up, wranglers, cowboy boots), sees me, then moves to close the door seemingly realizing his mistake (and mine for not checking that the door was locked). "Whew" I thought.

But he doesn't close the door all the way. "What?" I'm thinking.

A second later he steps back into view, opens the door and comes in, closes it and stares at me while I'm sitting on the toilet terrified. "OMFG!@#!@!@#"

I immediately and not very thoroughly wiped while he looked directly at me and I tried to avoid all eye contact with him.

Not wanting to wash my hands at this point, and continuing to pretend like he wasn't there I just moved towards the door where he was standing. I opened the door, and I left. He didn't stop me or say anything to me.

I've come up with a million plausible excuses for why he came in and watched me poop, but I really to this day don't know. It was definitely weird, but at the same time I was cornered behind a locked door, he could've done anything to me. Though maybe not gotten away with it, maybe that's all that saved me? I just don't know.
