I think you're just arguing for the sake of arguing here. Most of my teachers (went to a catholic school) and pastors and whatnot never really touched on the subject of gay people. The pastor would preach love and acceptance, and the religion teacher would teach us bible stories and shit. Gayness was never really brought up. It was fairly progressive, actually.

In my Catholic school, homophobic people were shunned. Nobody liked them. There were openly gay people in the school who were never picked on and the teachers weren't homophobic. The foods teacher even made a rainbow cake in honour of Pride.

However, there were homophobic people in my school and almost every single one of them turned out to be gay. Who taught them this? I think it was themselves. I would say their family, and while I'm not 100% certain, my gay friends who were formerly homophobic never talked about their parents not accepting them and never talked about their parents being homophobic.

A lot of them were scared of being gay. They didn't like being different. Even though basically everyone around them would've accepted them, they chose to hang out with the other homophobes. Very toxic. They ran around hating the openly gay kids at school and were shunned by everyone else. A very bizarre situation now that I'm really thinking about it, really. And despite my school being Catholic, there were a lot of atheists as well.
