When I read things like "it's only a 6 hour drive away", I'm so glad I'm not American or Australian

Less concentration = more dangerous for me. It’s easy to stop paying attention without realizing it. I usually have to turn on loud music and try to drive erratically to make sure I stay focused on long trips in the US. I end up feeling about the same, probably worse than UK trips.

Hate driving either way, though. At least in the UK it’s easy to take public transit. In the US, unless you’re in a handful of places, you’ll pay $30 to take a cab to Walmart. Then maybe you can walk to a restaurant or two, and maybe some random shops (like a tobacco store, a shop that sells cell phones, and another that sells fabrics), but if you want to go somewhere decent you need to call another cab and wait at least 30 minutes for it to show.

This is the main reason there are so many people with drink driving charges in the US. One bar is by Chili’s. The next one is two miles away next to Waffle House. The club is another mile and a half away near Dunkin’ Donuts. There are bus stops every .5-1 mile or more, and the bus probably shows every 45+ minutes. Taxis take 30-45 minutes. It’s like distances between things are designed to be as inconvenient as possible.
