Do you think without the dance the dragons would still go extinct prior to Dany?

Yes. I do not hold with the tale that they tell, which blames the dwindling size and strength of the dragons on the way the Targaryens kept them underground and chained and such.

I think dragons are magical. In that, their existence is tied to the relative distance of the red comet. Similar to how the white walkers die out to become basically a myth and then return during the time of the comet.

The Targaryen's dance seemingly killed off the larger and very old dragons. But i am assuming that even had they farmed them, or even if dragons were left wild, that as the comet is farther away from the planet that the magic dissipates and the dragons would dwindle in size and relative number either way.
