Your experiences with diagnosis?

I was misdiagnosed as ADHD and given Adderall in my late 20's. It sent me into a manic phase like no other. I thought it was just the medicine working. It wasn't until my original doctor moved and i got a new one that things were figured out. She had me fill out a form getting my family history since some in my family were diagnosed with mental illness and we talked about ups and downs in my life. It was a mind opening experience to realize all the times i disappeared and withdrew from my friends for months at a time and then later on be the life of the party who everyone wanted to hang with, that there was a reason and it was treatable. You have to keep in mind that there are bad doctors and good doctors. Regardless of grade point average when you graduate medical school your still a doctor. Most of the people I know that have mental illness went through at least 3 or 4 doctors to hit the sweet spot of meds. I went through 5 until I met my current doctor of 11 years.
