15 dead in elementary school shooting in Texas

This shit is so hard to wrap my head around. I keep seeing people talking about how they can't send their kids to school or go out in public without fearing something like this will happen. I never even had that fleeting thought when I was in school and rarely do now. When I hear a loud bang my mind goes to car backfire, maybe fireworks. If I'm indoors something being dropped loudly or a chip bag popping ... "what if it was a gun" is almost like a joke, to me it's akin to "what if it was a nuclear bomb". It's so foreign, so improbable it's not even worth considering. I don't even know anyone who's ever held a gun apart from my childhood best friend's dad who was a cop.

It just doesn't make sense to me. I get it would be difficult to implement more control because guns are so ingrained in American culture from what I understand, but still. Maybe small units for self defense, ok (although I've gotten by perfectly fine without guns and I've been a victim of serious stalking), but there's no reason anyone should have access to the kind of firearms they do today. It's ridiculous. No fucking reason.
