Something was bound to happen. Your husband has to stand up to his mother and choose you over her. If he doesn’t, you will be forever under her thumb.

She’s going to freak, throw a tantrum and, if she’s like my family, she’ll be back because she doesn’t want to lose her son/ grandkids.

She’ll never love you or accept you like her own, but after a few blowouts she will accept your role in the family. (She’ll never apologize) You’ll have to stand up for yourself and I hope to God your husband does too.

I suggestion try to learn more Spanish and create your own relationship with her. You can’t be afraid of the conflict. We’re fiery. But then things cool down.

I have a white friend who is married to a Latino. They’re basically an extension of my family so I’ve been present for a lot of their conflict. It has not been easy, but they keep showing up. Anyway, my friend’s dad has early onset Alzheimer and he went to the bathroom in their (Latino fam) home during a family celebration and smeared poop everywhere. My friend was mortified. MORTIFIED. She just lost it and started sobbing uncontrollably. The family just jumped into action- one sister took care of her, another took her kids and other family members took care of the dad and started cleaning. Not a peep of judgement. Not another mention of the incident.

Next day; criticizing her parenting, they didn’t spend enough time at the house, spoils the kids, too strict with their diet, too many activities yada, yada, yada. That’s when it hit her. That’s just how they are. And she is part of their family. They gossip about everyone. But when shit gets real, family is family. She’s not afraid of pissing them off because they’ll get over it. And if she pisses them off she’ll hear about it. And the sun will set and the sun will rise.
