All California Women Can Now Get Birth Control Without A Prescription

This isn't an opinion on the matter but more of what this means to pharmacy. I am a pharmacy tech and a few days ago a woman asked me if she could get birth control here and I said yes of course (I was very confused by this question!) after some staring I asked do you have a prescription?? -She didn't. And now I know why she asked this! I agree with another user's post about CVS (I used to work for them) being given A LOT of work with the MINIMAL amount of staff.. which is also true about my current pharmacy. What a lot of pharmacists complain about is how much time is being taken out of their work by people coming solely for consultations: questions/trying to get diagnosed instead of seeing a doctor. We usually have 1 pharmacist 1 tech and then 2 and 2 with a few hours of overlap. Thanks to the California law on consultations for new prescriptions there are blocks on the system we can't ring up any prescriptions without the pharmacist entering their passwords at the register at the point of sale. So imagine what happens when they are tied up with another patient or on the phone. Now they have to do mini doctor visits with women on a medication? There is already a lot of pressure on pharmacists and techs to multitask and we don't get enough hours for enough employees. But hey maybe this will turn into more light being shed at the responsibility of pharmacies and more respect (we're not just cashiers but the starting pay is like one). I hope this retail aspect starts to evolve the way accessibility to medicine does because at the current way it is now something as simple as selling birth control without a prescription but filling out paperwork and testing to me sounds like around 30 minutes of combined work time per person we already don't have.¯_(ツ)_/¯
