April NoSleep Contest Announcement

Not really sure what to do here. I have this VHS in my possession and I think it’s what’s leading to my early retirement from breathing. Before I go any further, let me just be clear that I’m not much of an internet person. I don’t use it very often and never bother with any social networks, so doing something like this is all new to me. I just wanted to tell you that to make you understand how out of the loop I am with this kind of stuff. I already know of some of the risks people take online, so when I am surfing the web, I take extreme precaution and never open anything I wasn’t looking for. So I thought I was playing it safe enough that I wouldn’t have to worry about ending up in a situation, like I am right now. You’d think that the only place you could view damaging content would be by clicking an anonymous link in an email. But going to your actual mail box is always free of those hazards. When I got to mailbox after getting off of work I noticed the usual was there: junk mail, bills, and useless magazines (etc.). But there was something different this time. A large yellow envelope was the first thing I saw. I took it out and felt it up. I could feel something bulky in it. I looked at the envelope and noticed there was no return address. There was nothing, actually. It was completely bare, front and back. When I got in the house, I went to the trash can and tore open the package. It was the VHS. I took the object out and threw the envelope away. There was a white sticker on the front of the tape. Written with fading black marker was “Audition”. Now, like I said, I’m behind on technology. I do have some modern appliances, like a blu ray player. But that was a gift. Not as if I’d ever care to go out and get one. Maybe it’s because of nostalgia, but I like to hold on to old stuff. So, I have, and still use, a VCR. I don’t know why I still prefer to watch movies on it. I guess I just like that old quality. I put the tape in and the screen was blank for a few seconds, then it showed nothing but a chair with a dark background. Then I heard some voices, but very faint. I tried to turn up the volume on my TV, but it did no good and just made static. I saw a hand briefly pop into frame. It seemed like it was gesturing to the chair. A young man came into frame and sat on the chair. Due to the poor quality, I really couldn’t hear too much of what anyone was saying, but it seemed as if there was some kind of interview taking place. From some of the words I managed to gather, I heard some key phrases that indicated that the man was an actor. And the name of the tape, of course. Despite the problems with the sound, everything seemed fine. The guy seemed to be happy and very enthusiastic. I will say though, there was still something that unnerved me about all this. Why would some random person put a tape into someone’s mailbox? Especially something like this? My best guess was maybe someone was trying psyche someone else out with nonsense. I was going to take out the tape and throw it away, but that is when I noticed a strange noise. It sounded like a low yelping. Like the kind of sound someone makes when they cry so hard and can’t catch their breath, so they get that hitch in their voice. And then I noticed it getting louder. It became less like yelping and more like someone trying not to laugh. Then all of a sudden the sound came to a jerking halt. The man in video started getting a different look on his face. His smile faded and looked over at something that seemed to have gotten him concerned. He leaned his head forward a little and that’s when the image froze. The screen blipped on and off like clockwork for about ten seconds. Then there was just a black screen. It stayed that way for several seconds and then the image came back. The man seemed panicked and was talking very fast. The sound was still terrible, but I heard him screaming so loud, I could hear him saying “No. No. What is this?”. That was when I saw the shadow of a figure behind the man. Four sets of hands reached out from either side hand held down his arms and legs. The man was screaming in absolute fear. Tears became visible on his face. The man looked towards the anonymous interviewer off screen and said “Why?”. I could hear the muffled voice off camera, but couldn’t understand. The man’s eyes became huge with fright. He screamed for his life and began crying uncontrollably. That’s when I saw what looked like the shadow of a stick rise on the wall behind the man’s head. It didn’t take me long to realize it was a shotgun. He screamed one last time and as soon as the screen went blank, a blast of static so loud came from the TV it almost punctured my eardrums. I stood in absolute shock, trying to process what I just saw. Then the image came back. The man was no longer in the chair. Instead, there was a smiling doll with a sign over its neck. In scribbled letters, the sign said “Pass it on”. Behind the chair, I could see a pair of arms coming from the edge of the screen. The hands on those arms were holding a pair of legs, making it seem as if a body was being dragged away. On the wall behind the chair, there was blood. I couldn’t take the tape out fast enough and threw it in the trash. I thought of calling the police, but was afraid to. Some sick person took the time to put this thing in my mailbox and it seems as if they’re trying to either scare me or…who knows? I don’t want to even think about it. Then, I had a better idea. I opened the kitchen drawer and got out a meat tenderizer. I took the tape out of the trash and destroyed it. I put the broken pieces back in the trash and decided it would be best if I just got out of the house. I went to the local bar to calm my nerves. About three hours later, I came back home. I entered the house and when I got into the kitchen, I noticed something was off. I looked at the counter and realized the meat tenderizer wasn’t there. I looked in the drawer and it was laying there with everything else. Did I even put it away? I might have not noticed I did it due to all the commotion, but I wasn’t going to let myself get paranoid over it. I went to bed and just tried to forget this whole experience.
It’s late and I’m getting a little tired, now. I’ll continue this another time. If I’m alive long enough to do it.
