AskWomen, have you ever moved to a new city with a platonic roommate? How far did you move? Were you driven by school/a job or just wanting to live somewhere new? How did it work out?

I moved to my current city with a group of friends. It's kind of funny how it happened. I was living with two good friends (a couple -- we'll call them T and C), and we had another close friend (we'll call her A) that lived in the same apartment complex who we hung out with daily.

"A" had a really good friend who lived in Austin, who had been trying to convince her to move there. She told me this one night when we were hanging out. Incidentally, I had just been accepted to graduate school in Austin, and my boyfriend and I were already making plans to move there but we hadn't told anyone yet. So I told A that we were moving and convinced her that she should, too.

We were really afraid to tell T and C about it, because all of us had sort of become a little "family" and we knew they'd be sad that three of their best friends were moving. So we decided to tell them together, so one night A and I sat them down and told them the news. T started crying and was really upset that we were leaving. And suddenly I had an idea: "Why don't you guys move too?"

It was kind of perfect because all of us were going through really shitty stuff in our lives for one reason or another. Terrible jobs (or trouble finding a job post-college), family drama, depression... we all decided together that moving would be good for all of us, and moving as a group would make it easier than moving alone.

We all shared a moving truck and moved on the same day. T, C and A got an apartment together and my boyfriend and I got our own apartment a few miles away. We moved three years ago this summer and we're all still really close. We all agree it's the best decision we ever made.
