Autism and job interviews: the extreme difficulty in being able to find work when you have ASD

It sucks because even those who are quite well adapted have significant issues. I have Aspergers syndrome myself, I used to have severe and unmanageable problems but these days most people just see me as a friendly bloke that's a little odd sometimes. That is, until it comes to work, or when I'm asked to explain my thinking. I've been rejected by interviewers because they were intimidated by my expression, and while I've learned to simplify and express my knowledge in a more intuitive way (a skill I learned to better tutor friends), my perspective tends to be so far from the norm that few people know what to make of it, even when it proves to be greatly beneficial.

Employers rarely want to hire an aberration, they want somebody who can fit into the social mold of their workplace. Disappointing on all sides, as it means they're passing up some of the most methodical, deliberate, and ingenious employees available. There are plenty of roles in which we would excel to an extraordinary degree, but to borrow words from the first interview panel I had, "you're not social enough".
