Bret Hart on the Royal Rumble: “That Was the Worst Royal Rumble I Think I’ve Ever Watched”; Reacts to AJ Styles’ Debut, Criticizes HHH.

I agree.

This wasn't one of the worst ever, but the dominating story of it (Roman Reigns vs. all) was not only a dud, but ended up being false due to him being gone for thirty minutes. Likewise, the other big story of Wyatts vs. Lesnar took a little too long and wasn't what people wanted to see. People wanted to see Lesnar wreck shit, not watch him get beat on by four guys at once. Especially those four guys. I love the Wyatts, but even as a group, Lesnar should be able to destroy all of them, no problem.

So the two biggest storylines in the Rumble were arguably the least exciting parts of the Rumble (compared to AJ Styles debut, Zayn eliminating Owens, Jericho going the distance, Ambrose being runner-up, New Day fun, R-Truth shenanigans, and the return of Triple H).

Apart from Styles and Zayn, I wasn't surprised during the match. If anything, WWE chose a lot of the bland decisions I expected them to make (Reigns being "eliminated" for a majority of the Rumble, Triple H winning, a crappy Lesnar elimination).

That doesn't mean it wasn't a fun Rumble. It was a party compared to the last two. But it was clear that Roman being the centerpiece of the Rumble brought it down.

And honestly, he shouldn't have ever been there. Nobody in that crowd wanted Roman there and him being there only made people sour on him. The Rumble should have been for a title shot at Wrestlemania, not the title itself. People were excited for the Rumble when Roman won the title because it suddenly had some unpredictability to it and could be about something other than Roman. But WWE got greedy and wanted Reigns to be the challenger at Mania instead of the champion and here we are. So now the audience has to sit through two months of "WILL REIGNS OVERCOME THE ODDS?" until he wins the title back at Wrestlemania and pisses off the Authority, bringing us back to where we were a week ago.

It was a good Rumble, but it could have been a great Rumble. And let's be honest, the only reason Triple H won is because that WWE has had Reigns beat every single heel on the roster in decisive fashion (and most of the babyfaces). There's nobody left but Triple H, and even he is a questionable choice who will probably end up getting cheered.
