[Discussion] Now that's it's been a full month since it's release, what are your thought's on Kendrick Lamar's album "To Pimp a Butterfly"?

First time through: I was pretty bleh about it, liked a few (For Free? King Kunta, The Blacker the Berry) until i and mortal man. That shit blew my mind. The concept was amazing, I spent two more listens just piecing everything together.

Fourth Time through: I really enjoyed every song (except Wesley's theory and u, the former was boring and the latter creeped me out). It was on replay pretty much every other day.

Tenth time through and so on until now: I fucking love this album, almost every song has remained appealing or given me something new every time I listen, except i and Mortal Man. I wish they would have kept the studio version of i, or a full live version, just for replayability. Mortal man hasn't held my attention the same way that Sing about Me did. It's interesting the first time and while you're figuring it out, but after a while, it just makes the album soul crushing every time I play it. I start over at You Ain't Gotta Lie, which is a decent end, one that kind of gives it a bositive ish vibe. tbh, I sometimes skip it too and start over at the blacker the berry, which continues to be a favorite. Wesley's Theory has grown on me. For Free? is still hilarious and one of my favorite parts of the album. King Kunta is where I really start to get into the meat of the album, just drift into the music. Institutionalized is one of my favorite songs ever. There's just so much to it, it's almost a surrealist music take on rap, with all of the little flute flourishes over a really unique beat. These walls is good, catchy, a calm before u. u, man. I still don't feel happy listening to it, but there's so much there in the first half that I can see reflected in myself, and how I've fucked up things for others and how they feel to me. And the second half is just great. "I'm fucked up, but I'm not as fucked up as you". Alright is such a pick me up, catchy and fast(ish, for this album). For Sale? is great when I'm paying attention, I don't know I tend to zone out during it and wake up during Momma. Momma, I don't know, weird song. Still working on it. Hood Politics is my second favorite song, when I'm just playing single songs, I've gone back to this a lot. It's a lot like Backseat Freestyle in this wierd way for me, has gotten a lot more interesting over time. How much a Dollar Cost and Complexion are a great one two punch; I usually listen to the together like I did with good kid and m.A.A.d city. And then we're back to Blacker the Berry. Just a great album, will be listening to it for a long time.
