Does living in NYC make you more materially driven?

I work in an industry where I do client-facing events almost weekly, and these clients are generally pretty elite. It's hard sitting at a table with a group of people and being like "shit, her necklace is literally 50k". I grew up really comfortable, and I am super lucky in that regard, but not that comfortable.

Overall, though, the city has given me a little bit of a "Keeping Up With the Joneses" feeling.

In terms of activities and restaurants - if you're hanging out with trust fund babies, you're going to be hitting up every cool spot in the city. I feel really bad for men in this regard - generally if you're a girl, you can get into clubs/bars without a cover or having to pay off some dickhead door guy. It's normal to drop a couple hundred per person for dinner a few times a week.

Every year I have people say things like "are you going to Sundance?" or "are you going to Cannes?" And if my work doesn't require it, I'll say no and tell them that. But then there's a follow up of "well why don't you just go for fun?". Or you'll notice that there are "account executives" or "consultants" who take 17,000 vacations and are essentially always OOO because tons of people are kind of just... working to work... to kill time, I guess?

So yeah.
