Yeah I get it. I still love hotels tbh but you have to read the reviews, because you are right a lot of countries don't enforce strict enough standards of quality. I like regular BNBs as well because they are usually run by people who care about hospitality and are extroverted grandma types.

I am not a fan of a lot of the homestay stuff. It can be bad on multiple fronts, like the customer destroying the owners house or the owner being petty and having no people skills or falling asleep when they should be meeting the guest to let them in.

A good hotel is usually managed by someone with a hospitality degree while an Airbnb is most of the time is a random person renting an apartment. Hotels also have high power laundry machines for washing the sheets. I don't know if I trust every Airbnb type host to wash the sheets every time. Not to say there aren't flea bag motels, but if you pick a place with good reviews you are usually good.
