I'm in Egypt. Few things to understand
-Religion isn't so much about belief in the third world as it is about tribal identity. So it's about who is your father and his brothers and your grandfather and your tribe. So in Egypt there are three recognized tribes, Muslim, Jew and Christian, all others aren't official religions and you can't even officially be them.
-If you are a foreigner you are mostly left out of this nonsense. Christians will assume you are Christian and bitch about how awful the Muslims treat them, Muslims will try to convert you or try to tell you how awful is the West (because there's no religion in the West).
So if you are a Hindu, say, you just keep quiet about it. You're okay so long as you don't outright insult Islam.
-Between Christians and Muslims there are more problems. In rich areas its normal. There people live and work together, though they primarily network together. Some copts do very well due to strong Copt business network. They stick close.
-In poor areas it is more like two gangs living side by side. Usually is okay until there's a dispute (Romeo and Juliet stuff).
-In these cases forget it. It's violent. It's fucked up houses and all are burned down. Usually Copts get wrecked because they are weaker. This was much worse during chaos following revolution.
-Usually people don't use the State as a weapon. It's rare to call the cops on someone. Most people don't like or trust the cops the only reason that would happen is if you had an uncle who was a cop and so cops were part of your team. Otherwise if you are pissed you call your brother and his friends.
-This is not necessarily better though because sometimes this creates lynch mobs where people are killed.
-Especially if you are Shia'a
-Worst thing to be is Shia'a
-Worse than Jew even. Though no Jew is outwardly Jewish in Egypt. They just chill and continue their jobs as reporters. Jewish people survive fine in Middle East because they know how to not say they are Jews.
-TL:DR; Don't be Shia
