End of history blues: where's the innovation in modern music, and how can you recognize it?

Robert Anton Wilson once remarked that the ancient world had only one Buddha every 10,000 years, but now there’s a Buddha on every street corner. As the world becomes more populous, wealthy and egalitarian, tools that used to be used to be hard to get are now abundant. I think so much great recorded music is produced now that it’s hard to make a case for the value of recorded music itself. It seems like every city has hundreds or thousands of artists on the level of Elvis or The Beatles. If you want to hear some interesting music like nothing you’ve heard before, it’s almost easier to just make some yourself rather than dig through all the stuff other people have made.
