Why is everybody so obsessed with being happy?

In my opinion, your first sentence is cynical and unrealistic. People who seek happiness for the reasons you mentioned are not happy, and are going to have a lot of trouble actually discovering happiness. Happiness is an ideal state, and those who are physically (i.e., not depressed) able to do so gravitate towards it. It is natural; humans even have particular neurotransmitters that are intended to ensure they enjoy enough happiness.

All in all, you might consider that it might be as difficult for a lot of happy people to understand your mental state as it is for you to understand theirs. On the flip side, I know some truly happy individuals who have struggled with depression in the past, and understand both sides of the coin. In my experience, this is often the case with older and wiser people that I speak to. Your description of most people seeking happiness is, to me, not very different from non-empathetic descriptions of depressed people ("they're too lazy to help themselves" - that sort of thing).
