Exclusive poll finds huge support for Syrian refugees

Okay, a few things. First, I've given money on multiple occasions to help support the settlement of Syrian refugees in Canada. So yeah, I do care enough to put my money where my mouth is, though I certainly wouldn't call it a "pet cause".

As to the argument in your first comment, I think you're greatly overstating how easy it might be for Syrian refugees to get established in Canada without any assistance. These people have extremely little money to start out with, they don't speak English or French in many cases, they lack Canadian credentials (in terms of education and certifications), they've been torn from the only life they've ever known and brought halfway around the world to a foreign nation where they might literally know nobody, and in your hypothetical, they'll also be competing on the job and housing market against possibly hundreds of thousands of other refugees that are pouring in uncontrollably while dealing with the same issues themselves. That's a lot of barriers to overcome without any kind of assistance from the government. People can work really fucking hard and still not even come close to succeeding under those conditions.

Finally, I think it's entirely fair to say that some small subset of refugees, given years of grinding poverty and zero support from the government, might radicalize out of anger at their situation. That said, I'd say their kids are the even bigger concern. You're right to say that many of the refugees would be difficult to radicalize because they've fled such awful circumstances (though I don't think it's impossible that a few might). Their children, though? If their parents can't provide a decent life for them growing up due to a lack of stable housing and extremely low incomes, that breeds resentment. Maybe that resentment will manifest itself through petty crime. Maybe it'll manifest itself through something worse. Remember, the dickhead who planned the Paris attacks was the son of an immigrant, grew up in an awful neighbourhood blighted by poverty, and had multiple convinctions for petty crimes before eventually radicalizing, so it's not like there's zero precedent for this kind of thing.
