Family movie night tonight, your thoughts on best/worst Christian films?

As I ponder this, I realize all of my favorite Christian movies are not appropriate for kids at all. (Calvary, Bedazzled (the original with Dudley Moore), Gibson's The Passion of the Christ)

Almost all of the Disney, Pixar, Warner Brothers, and Dreamworks movies directed at kids are appropriate and pretty good. (The Dreamworks OT animated cartoons are well-done, but might scare the very little ones.) And those that have other than Christian representations of the afterlife (Mulan, Pocahontas (which I dislike for PC reasons), and The Princess and the Frog), are great conversation starters for, "Well, we as Christians believe..." etc.

I think some of the older live-action Disney movies are good, too, like Pollyanna, The Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes, and Herbie, the Love Bug (the original), and of course Mary Poppins are great family movies as well. Though my kids would never tolerate some of the black and white ones like Flubber and The Shaggy Dog, which was too bad.

Some of the other greats like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the Wizard of Oz, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (though the child-stealer tends to scare the stuffing out of little ones) are wonderful.

The new Nanny McPhee movies are fantastic, too.

The only one I'd caution you about is the live-action Casper with Christina Ricci. As one reviewer put it, and I paraphrase, there's not a single religion's views of life and death that this movie won't offend, which is very true. Essentially, Casper turns out to be a dead boy who's father has created a machine that can bring him back to life, which is used in an attempt to be humorous, but is really kinda horrific. You'll have to field all sorts of "does that really exist" kinds of questions, particularly if a beloved family member, friend, or pet has died recently enough for the child to be thinking about it.

I also think the Golden Compass movie is dreck, and it's part of a series written by an atheist to criticize Christianity. And they wonder why the movie failed.
