A government tech agency recently decided to have a discussion among its employees about the Bechdel Test.

I really didn't think I was saying anything especially controversial when I initially said that I didn't find the test to be an especially good tool for measuring how women are depicted in film. I deleted my responses specifically because I was tired of dealing with angry replies, but it seems even that isn't enough.

and people responded by pointing out it's not an end-all-be-all test, nor is the test really used in any legitimate form of research. it's pretty much just a smell test: I can take a whiff of a potato and it might smell like it's past its usefulness, but there's still a very high chance the potato is actually good and filling. all it means is that I should examine the potato more in-depth to see if I'd be ok with eating it, as compared to a potato that passes the smell test and thus gives me no reason to doubt it's tasty goodness.

It's in poor taste for you to be comparing me to a gator over that - because as I've said many times before, unless someone is distributing personal information and threatening to rape people to death, the magnitude of the comparison really doesn't hold up. Social-justice-minded people can and do disagree a lot. This "you're acting like GG!" stuff serves nobody.

but it wasn't a comparison, it was me pointing out that the comment you made is literally the same highly-upvoted comment in KiA's thread, and both of them are false because the bechdel test isn't just "the punchline to a joke".

if I was going to compare you to GG, I'd insinuate that you hate women or the improvement of media just like they do. but I didn't insinuate that, nor do I think you hate women or the improvement of media.

I was simply pointing out that what you said is absolutely misleading, and that it was the exact same misleading comment that KiA is pushing right now at this very moment. that's no more a comparison than someone pointing out that I like MGS and GG likes MGS.

In the future, I'd ask that you not dig up comments after I've deleted them.

I didn't "dig up" the comment. that's not even possible to do with a user-deleted comment unless someone uses a reddit archiving site which I really couldn't give two shits about using for something that isn't harassment, death threats, etc.

all that happened is that I went to hit 'save' after typing a reply to your comment, was notified underneath the text box that 'the comment you're replying to has been deleted', so I copied my comment (which already had the quote from your comment, which isn't even your full comment) and put it as a reply to someone else because it needed to be said that the bechdel test is not just a 'punchline to a joke' as if that's a reason to completely disregard it, and that statement is woefully misleading.

also, neither of the two replies I see to your initial comment are "angry". if you received angry replies in PM, then give us those usernames and we'll ban them. if you received angry replies in this thread, report them rather than deleting your comment so we can see them and take action against them.

the two replies listed above only gave insight on why the bechdel test can be useful even if it's not something to be applied academically due to its faults.
