I was homeless, and I wish I knew all these people had to go through that too, while I was living it. But this is just fucking degrading, and yes the guy wants the food, but it’s not like he just got him a new forever home and a chew toy. Homeless people may sometimes have mental illness, but they’re not stupid, I would argue they are some of the smartest people out there, society just doesn’t let them put it to good use, so instead they are using it to ingeniously adapt and survive. Playing In the Arms Of An Angel when he still has to go sleep on pavement was just as humiliating for him, as it would be for you, and I guarantee the thoughts going on in his head were “fuck people I grew up with will see this, the illusion of dignity is gone”. And what is he gonna do about it? Say “no man, shove this egg McMuffin up your disingenuous ass!”, and get published as the ungrateful homeless man politicians use as their poster boy to cut spending? This would be like, if you lost your job, and had to go on food stamps, and when you showed up to get your card the DHS employees came out with their cell phones recording, as some pop singer wailed “here is your heeeeeeeerooooo”. There is a ton of grey area between not making these people feel like helpless pups, and not doing ANYTHING at all.
