There was a classmate of mine who did her early school studies in uae and then moved to our state. She never used to wear a head scarf and i believe that was her choice. She joined our school which when she was probably 12-13. The first year she came in she used to come like any normal girl and used to get a bus from her home town. She was not used to Kerala then and she would be cat called the ways she used to walk and the bus she used to frequent for not wearing a head covering. She was pretty thickened inspite of her age,they even went to her parents i think. A year after i think she got death threats , and finally we started seeing her wearing a head covering the moment she was out of school. This was in 90s when hijabs were rare and Muslim women maximum they used to wear just a head covering as religious thing. Talk about freedom
