How important are good clubs?

I had the Diamond Tour clones of the Taylormade Burner 2.0 set. All-in I think it was about $350 with a bag and they provided a free fitting in their store. However their charts are a pretty good guide if you can't get to the store.

I really liked them for what they were. Lots of people wanted to hit them to see how they compared and especially the woods and driver people were generally impressed. The two downsides were the driver head cracked after two years (I didn't bother with trying to get a replacement, it still hit fine) and the irons were on the heavy side. I had no idea except my coach kept commenting on how heavy they were.

I hit a burner 2.0 fairway wood and it was fairly comparable in my opinion. The Diamond Tour had an offset and my friends didn't, so that made a little difference.

No reason to not recommend them really, but I think once you have the money and know you're sticking with the game investing in some "real" clubs will give you a slight improvement.

If you can get good with the knockoffs, my theory was that you'd be good with anything and if the brand name clubs really did anything it'd be that much better.

I just bought a set of Callaway XRs and OMG, they are awesome. I know they're lofted a little stronger than what I had (about half a club), but I'm carrying the 7 iron farther than my 6 iron with rollout was. However, don't go hitting expensive clubs unless you have money to burn first. You'll be super happy with the clones and then you'll have all the more reason to be happy with your splurge of real clubs when you finally get those. I also got some Taylormade hybrids, woods, and driver and those are nice, but not as big of a difference as the irons surprisingly.

In short, set a goal and then reward yourself when you get to it. Mine was to break 100 and be able to hit a very consistent draw. Those two things didn't happen at the same time. I figured out how to score before I got my swing under control. Now for the 80s this year. ;)

Good luck!!!
