How long is too long to hang around?

No matter how cool you were as an active or how much younger brothers looked up to you as a senior, all that goes out the window once you become the weird alum that lingers around too long. I’ve seen this first hand. Just ride off into the sunset and come back for homecoming and alumni events.

I made the “mistake” of becoming social chair and house DJ as a senior and getting super involved in the party side of things my last 2 years. So as a mid-year graduate, post grad life hit me like a ton of bricks. One week I was DJing for 400 people, railing nose beers with sorority girls and the next week I was sitting in a cubicle for 8 hours a day. It was brutal and the temptation was definitely there to slide up to a Friday night party or offer to DJ one more darty, but I’d seen a guy or 2 like that when I was an active and they always overstayed their welcome until it got weird. What I did end up doing was taking a few Sunday afternoons to teach one of the younger brothers how to DJ so he could easily slide into my old spot. I still get after it on homecoming and try to show face at alumni events, but that’s about the extent of my involvement.
