If being gay was a choice. Why would anyone choose to be gay?

We see a certain amount of anti-gay intolerance even in the most progressive countries, and in the more backwards countries homosexuality is still regarded as a crime that is punishable by death. It is obvious to me that if sexual orientation were a choice, nearly everybody would choose to be heterosexual. It would be literally insane to deliberately choose to belong to a highly persecuted group when you are not compelled to do so - however, since insanity does exist in our world, I would expect that some people would still make that choice. But very few.

What if you had a choice, not only to be straight or gay, but also to be asexual if you so desired? That, I believe, would be the most popular choice. It might actually be so popular that the human race would become extinct through failure to reproduce. As children, before we feel any sexual urges, we become aware that sexuality exists. We perceive it as a weird and icky obsession which affects teenagers and adults. We see that it makes people's lives tremendously more complicated. It involves people in agonizing struggles, it induces people to take excessive risks, it is known sometimes to result in suicide by heartbroken people who fail to mate, it leads to marriage which often results in agonizing and expensive divorce, custody battles, and child support payments. It creates a terrible risk of sexually transmitted disease. It makes fools of people, which is celebrated endlessly in TV sitcoms and in comedy of all sorts. Children can usually see quite clearly that sexual desire is ridiculous and most of them would choose never to experience it, if they could make such a choice and were not simply subject to their biological programming.

The biggest logical problem for anyone who thinks that homosexuality is a choice, is that they have never actually made a choice, and even if they wanted to, they would be incapable of choosing a different sexuality than the one they have. Bisexuals are more flexible, but most people are not bisexual. There are some cases in which a marginally bisexual person, let us say a man who could be described as 90% heterosexual and 10% homosexual in terms of his inclinations, might deliberately choose to repress his 10% homosexuality, and then believe that he is heterosexual by choice. But the great majority of heterosexuals do not even have to go that far. They have never made a choice of sexual orientation, they simply have the orientation with which they are programmed. And they should be able to realize that if they did not make a choice, neither did homosexuals.
