Set about 3-4 years after TFA, Finn, Poe, Leia, and the rest of the Resistance are collecting any weaponry and vehicles they can as well as recruiting more soldiers, as the First Order pushes them back and takes control of the galaxy and destroys any the populace of planets who refuse them through orbital bombardment. [As I remember, there was some disarmament act which led to the reduction in the Republic's military which leads to...] Leia sends Finn, Poe, BB-8, and a group of Resistance fighters out to seek out the possible location of tons of fighters, weapons and more vehicles hidden by some of the New Republic politicians. There are even rumors of whole new never-before-seen fighters hidden along with them.[Because I want new weapons, vehicles, and fighters since it's been 30 YEARS!!!] Finn and Poe's relationship grows, but Finn is highly upset that Rey left him after everything that happened.
Meanwhile, Luke begins teaching Rey about everything that happened and how Ben Solo became Kylo Ren. There's more he's hiding and refuses to tell her about. He trains her, but suffers from visions from her potential pasts which seem to haunt her. Despite her terrible visions, Luke refuses to tell her anything and continues training her. When he sees that she isn't progressing, her reveals the truth to her, and to become even closer.
With Kylo and Snoke, Snoke can feel the pull of the light side coming for Kylo Ren, and only continues to influence him even more. He begins showing the power he can have, and promises him that he will make him even stronger than his idol, Darth Vader. Snoke teaches Kylo how to use his force abilities more effectively, and an ancient lightsaber form no person has ever been able to master.
The final act is about the Resistance launching an attack on the Finalizer [the Star Destroyer we saw in the TFA] and a major military outpost and weapons facility which the First Order has been operating from ever since the destruction of the Starkiller Base. The Resistance wants to take control of the Finalizer's bombardment system and satellites and use them against the First Order's major outpost on the ground. In this epic space/atmosphere/ground battle, we get to see both BRAND NEW Resistance Fighters and First Order fighters.
Feeling the dangers that Kylo Ren's new abilities opposes to the Resistance, Luke believes that he and Rey must defeat Kylo Ren now, as he has become too powerful. They make their way to the location of the huge battle in the Millennium Falcon. They meet up with Finn on the ground and Finn and Rey have an emotional moment for seeing each other for the first time in years.In the lightsaber battle with Kylo Ren, Luke is severely injured and Rey is forced to fight Kylo alone. She barely holds him off, but she and everyone else escapes as the Finalizer's bombardment system has been taken over and fires onto the outpost. The heroes retreat, putting another blow into the First Order, but the First Order have plenty more. Kylo Ren survives and kills Snoke, now believing he no longer needs him, and calls Hux to General.
