As a 3L and licensed legal intern at the public defender's office, I really wish more prosecutors had your attitude. Around here they all seem to care only about their conviction rate, possibility for promotion, and a potential future spot on the judiciary or some elected office. My city is one of the absolute worst for heroin (highest OD rate in the nation, apparently), and the prosecutors here are relishing all the easy felony convictions they can rack up. The would-be prosecutor students in my class are all salivating over their future career path. They never mention anything about justice or community; just "AG & DA this, Judge that," as nauseam. As a 34yo recovering alcoholic who's empathetic towards addicts, I'm growing to hate "the opposition," often to the detriment of my own ethics. I find myself caring less about the right and fair outcome, and more about "sticking it to The Man" out of spite. Any advice not to become so bitter so early in my legal career? And please don't say "get into tax law."
