LPT: Hate your printer? Go laser, here's why.

No idea why it was deleted but I had bookmarked it so I could come back later and now it's gone.

Luckily it can be found on google's cache. I will also post it below for you.

I saw in the irrational hatred thread that a lot of people hate their printers. After owning a basic laser printer for 5 years, here is what I've learned: Laser is more reliable than inkjet

Inkjet printers use liquid ink that dries after sitting for a while. When you need that printer to work on that rare occasion, it seldom will because the ink has dried in the nozzle. Also, inkjet printers use a moving head on a belt or gear drive system. These systems fail frequently and are rarely ever worth trying to fix.

Laser printers use a powder toner that has no shelf life and is ready when you need it. They also have very few moving parts since the transfer system is a drum rather than a head. Less parts mean less to break. I dropped my laser printer, cracked the plastic case in half, and it still works perfectly.

Laser is more cost effective than inkjet

Inkjet printers are inherently designed to be expensive. The cartridges included are filled to a fractional capacity so you quickly have to buy new ones. If you use ink too quickly, you have to buy new ink. If you don’t use it frequently enough, the ink dries and you have to buy new ink. It’s a lose-lose.

Laser toner cartridges have a huge capacity and are cheaper to print per page. If you’re a high capacity user, toner is cheaper to resupply. If you’re a low capacity user, toner doesn’t dry up, so it will be ready when you need it and has no qualms about waiting around. I’ve casually used the same toner cartridge for 5 years with no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Laser is more affordable than it’s ever been

Laser was once big, slow, and expensive. Now, brand name home laser printers start at $90 USD. They might not be as sexy and low-profile as some inkjet units, but what they lack in looks they make up for in cost savings and performance. The reason they aren’t more popular is because profit margins for inkjet printers keep them on the endcaps and in the store ads as a “great deal.”

Extra pro-tip: Outsource color printing

If the whole reason you have an inkjet printer is for its color, use Wal-Mart, Costco, Walgreens, CVS or any other web-to-store photo development service. It’s cheaper and the results are light-years ahead of anything that your inkjet printer can produce.

TL:DR: FRICKIN LASER BEAMS
