LPT: when leaving a job or even getting fired, do it as gracefully as possible.

Two Real Stories

Job One
A few years ago I ended up at a place that I thought I really wanted to work at. Four months in, I hated it. I was sabotaged every step of the way, management was an absolute joke, and the culture still creeps me out to this day.

But instead of make a big scene, I simply found a new job. Gave the company a month of notice, finished all my outstanding assignments and left on what I thought were good terms.

Four months into the next gig they were threatening to sue me for stealing company secrets. What I "stole" you ask? The knowledge of how to use an open source CMS. That's right, something that you cannot "steal."

Job Two
The very next job, it went great. I killed it there, really helped their bottom line. Got the company out of debt. Even worked my way into a promise of partnership (always get these promises in writing).

Then, it just started going south. Management forced me into working xmas eve and xmas day while they all lounged around with their families, sales picked up terrible clients that forced us into no win situations, they kept on cancerous employees - just bad.

So I decided to move on. Again, gave them a month's notice. Reached out to all my clients to let them know what was up and who to contact in the future. Trained my replacement. Said nothing bad to anyone about anything.

I was thanked by the office manager trying to get my health insurance to lapse through a backdoor way of not notifying me when payments were due, not providing receipts, etc. Now, that relationship isn't so good.

Moral of these stories

It does not matter whether you treat them nice or rude. Those companies only exist for themselves and their own benefit. If they want to fire you, they don't give you notice. If they want to lay you off, again they don't give you notice.

You treating them nicely does not guarantee the same treatment in return, and trust me, they likely will not be taking you back no matter how you leave (although that has happened to me once).

This doesn't mean be a dick to them, it just means don't go out of your way to make this smooth. Protect yourself and look out for your interests.
