Montrose is Dead. Long Live Montrose?

This is exactly how I feel. Moved into Montrose at 18 back in 1998 but I had already been spending my weekends there since I could drive a car. It was just a little sketchier back then, and hip. Some of my fondest memories include hanging out on the roof of the Proletariat back when a friend lived upstairs, outrageous house parties in many of the historic homes now occupied by more affluent residents or law firms, pride parade, the smell of cheap weed everywhere and eating at Tapatia back when it was a dimly lit shithole. I still visit my old haunts a few times a week, Catbirds, Rudyards, etc. I wouldn't go so far as to say Montrose is dead, but... it's just very sanitized now. It reminds me of Austin. Trendy restaurants, well dressed young people, and a very noticeable absence of hippies, freaks, or punks. I guess I wouldn't lament the change as much if another neighborhood had sprung up with a similar vibe, but as far as I know there isn't one currently.
