Muslim Women/former of Reddit: Here in America I feel that it is widely believed that having to wear a Hijab, regardless of the type, is seen as oppressive. What is your experience with wearing it? What does it mean to you?

I am a closeted ex muslim living in Singapore, and had to go to religious classes every weekend from when i was 7-17?

Over here, it depends on how liberal your parents are. To my friends, they wore the hijab because they had to, and was taught to wear it since young. It isn't something that they can argue about, mainly because their parents will "punish" if they didn't want to wear it. We were taught that it is okay for parents to hit their children as long as it is to teach them. We were also taught that if you don't cover your body, then you are impure, that if you don't wear the hijab, you'll be punished in hell. There was a huge emphasis on going to hell if you don't do this and that, telling 12 year old kids the kind of torture they'll go through if they're not the perfect muslims.

Growing up, my parents have tried to make me be filial, told me that my cousins had it worse because their parents were more prone to anger and abuse compared to mine. I stopped talking to them so it doesn't really matter to me, but my 14 year old sister wears the hijab.
